hogs back brewery

The Hogs Back Brewery is a small family-owned brewery with big plans to make their beer genuinely local and their brewing more sustainable.

Great beer comes from a combination of passion, expertise and the best ingredients. So in 1994 The Hogs Back Brewery decided to grow their own hops. It’s been a steep learning curve for them, but they nurture, harvest, dry and pack their hops on their farm.

Hogs Back opened their doors to Manor Farm in 1992. They believe beer is best brewed locally. That way, it’s better for their customers, the environment and the local community.

Silent Pool

Nestled deep in the woodlands of the Surrey Hills are one of our Gin suppliers, Silent Pool. Founders Ian McCulloch and James Sherbourne came together to create a distillery where things are done properly. Having met in their local pub (where else?) they set about making a truly sustainable distillery, next to a fresh water source, producing handcrafted, artisan spirits using locally sourced ingredients.

With most distilleries ending up on boring industrial estates or grim locations, Ian and James scouted many locations in the south of England before finding Sherbourne Farm. A former cow barn and petting zoo on the banks of the magical Silent Pool in the Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty and the perfect spot for their new venture.

Greyfriars Vineyard

Just outside Guildford, Surrey and located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham is Greyfriars Vineyard. The original vineyard was planted in 1989 and since taking over in 2010 Greyfriars have expanded the area under vine to three sites and almost 50 acres focusing on producing stunning English Sparkling Wine.

Their vineyards are planted predominantly with three classic Champagne varieties; Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. They do however also have small plots of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. They are also producing a range of fantastic English Sparkling Wines reflecting the special and unique local soil conditions, heritage and climate of the the Surrey North Downs.

With exotic ingredients such as Jamaican allspice, green cardamom from Guatamala, Iranian orange flowers or South American tonka beans it isn’t always possible to source locally but The Gin Kitchen love collaborating with like-minded businesses and charities closer to home.
